Bhattacharya’s academic work, funded by NIH’s National Institute on Aging, has explored topics ranging from the impact of Medicare on health outcomes to aging in Japan and antibiotic resistance in Africa.

"I'm incredibly grateful to Rhianon working with the force. It's important we don't only look at academic work, but lived experience and learn from that," she said.

It really started by laying down a few theories that we had about the differences between our academic work, the general body of academic work, and what we were seeing in the public discussion.

But researchers say decades of academic work show it will do the opposite in the long run.

Her academic work also explores the social consequences.
