Various expedients have been resorted to in rebellious cases, such as vesication with ammonia-water, maceration of the skin for some hours with glycerine, and the like.

A milder degree of skin-stimulation is represented by rubefacient liniments of various kinds, which may be briskly rubbed into the skin along the track of the painful nerve, without any danger of producing vesication.

When the erysipelas is of moderate character there is simply a redness of the integument, which feels somewhat hard and thickened, and upon which there often appear small vesications.
