“I wasn’t campaigning for it, but I was thirsting for something different, completely removed from the work I had been doing up to that point,” Jenkins said.

“He’s a guy that’s been thirsting for knowledge. You love that. Any time you have guys like that, you want him to have success.”

And sometimes the changes come like a whirlwind, dividing parishes between those thirsting for a more reverent Catholicism and those who feel their spiritual home has been taken from them.

"All of us are God's nomads, pilgrims in search of happiness, wayfarers thirsting for love," he said, adding that the Christian faith quenched that thirst.

The pattern could leave millions of Italians surrounded by water now, but, in the summer, thirsting for a drop.
