Ward fired a pass left to veteran slotback Lincoln Victor, who threw a deep pass down the sideline to tight end Cooper Mathers for a 46-yard gain.

Sheffield, a juco-transfer slotback, led all pass-catchers with 121 yards on three receptions.

“DT Sheffield has been a really bright spot in our offense,” Dickert said Thursday of the 5-foot-10, 172-pound slotback, who produced more than 2,000 yards and 26 receiving touchdowns over the past three seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

On the first play of his next series, Mateer threw a high-arching pass deep downfield to slotback DT Sheffield, who jumped for a sideline catch and ran for a 60-yard score.

The slotback, who spent seven years at WSU and tallied 1,966 career yards, had a nice session catching deep passes from Coug quarterback Cameron Ward.
