The first call for dining car reservations soon went over the loudspeaker, but we were sad to learn that only sleeper car passengers, and some lucky business class passengers, are allowed to reserve a table there.

“My husband and I were coming home on Amtrak’s California Zephyr in March 2018. Our train was the last to get through the Donner Pass before a blizzard closed the tracks for two days. As we rolled through the pass, we saw one magical scene after another out the window of our sleeper car. This was one of them.”

Of a trip they took together in an Amtrak sleeper car—an attempt to rekindle a sense of adventure—she writes that they ended up simply trapped in a tiny space: “I seethed and withdrew, thinking how much fun I would be having if I were alone.”

We used all my Amtrak points to buy two round-trip tickets in a sleeper car for a seven-day trip to Montana for my mom’s 75th birthday.
