Sabbath Day

The island, which has a population of about 20,000, has a long tradition of observing the Sabbath day, meaning that some shops - including both supermarkets - currently keep their doors closed on a Sunday.

The practice is derived from the Bible's fourth commandment which states "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy".

The camp incorporates aspects of Jewish practice such as lighting candles for Shabbat and Havdalah, the ceremony to close out the Sabbath day.

When the Supreme Court first looked at whether employees could be forced to work on their sabbath day, it was the 1970s.

He said the Fourth Commandment found in Exodus 20:8 — “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” — would not let him work Sundays.
