A longtime resident of the north Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan, Doug spends part of his days building electric vehicles for Ford as a machine repairman.

He remembered his father, Jose, a stove repairman who instilled in his son and daughter the importance of education, bemoaning the gerrymandering that kept Latinos from electing more of their own.

His business was as a repairman, though, and the watches he made were kept on a pair of shelves in the store.

“I love this place, but it’s just a tough place to live in,” said Mr. Heintz, 28, an auto body repairman.

Guerrero has told friends in Venezuela, including his brother — a cellphone repairman — that the journey to the United States is worth it.
