Battery-powered trains would save rail operators the cost of installing overhead wires on unelectrified tracks, which are found throughout the UK.

This allows it to use up to 50% less fuel when running on lines with no overhead wires.

For the next four weeks, there will be fewer trains late at night, while engineers carry out remedial work to the tracks, signalling and overhead wires.

Beyond that, the overhead wires will be replaced in west London.

The new line will replace Metro Route 70 and will be the first RapidRide route to operate as a trolley bus, drawing electricity from overhead wires.
