The city’s mayor of 22 years, Malcolm Brodie, competed with residents for control of the room, and tensions escalated to screaming matches in the hallway, where Mounties intervened.

“Tuition for junior college should be cheap, but with us being from out of state it costs more money,” said Zach Curry, a former defensive end for the Mounties.

The Mounties were otherwise tight-lipped and would not confirm whether other law enforcement agencies, including Canada’s spy agency, were participating in the investigation.

The assailant, Gabriel Wortman, was killed by two Mounties at a gas station in Enfield, Nova Scotia, 13 hours into his rampage.
