One of the main drags on the world's second-largest economy has been the downturn in the country's property market which began three years ago.

Firefighter John Clingingsmith was monitoring the fire from the main drag in Running Springs, making himself available to anyone who had questions or needed help.

In its heyday, the town’s main drag featured saloons, dance halls, inns and gambling houses.

“There’s no town. There’s no main drag. ... This place has always been made of vacation homes. It’s not conducive to full-time living. It’s really far from everything.”
