In Puerto Rico, conservationists are worried about several species of birds and other animals in the island’s El Junque rain forest, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Kenneth Jay Lane, 85, designer and bon vivant who built a global business from glittering acts of unabashed deception, producing fake and junk jewelry — or, as he liked to say, tongue in cheek, “faque” and “junque” — died at home in Manhattan on July 20.

“There will be pilgrimages to see this, I think,” said Michal Makarovich, owner of the Hampden Junque store, who is spearheading the effort and has appeared on its behalf before Baltimore’s Public Art Commission.

The brewery is at the line that divides downtown and Highland in an area where many industrial companies are rooted, but also across the street from Central Station lounge and about a block’s distance from the row of businesses that include Agora Borealis art gallery, Good Granoly, iArchitecture and Bayou Some Junque Cafe and Antiques.

Finding anything worth eating in this morass of haute junque proved as difficult as avoiding thorns among roses.
