The diplomat said methanol poisoning - where alcoholic drinks are contaminated with a toxic compound - is well-known among consulates and tourism operators.

They also said methanol poisonings are reported to consulates across the region.

That attack was in response to an Israeli air strike on an Iranian consulate complex in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on 1 April, which killed 13 people, including seven members of Iran's overseas Quds Force.

In April, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel in retaliation for a deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria that killed several top commanders.

The man was hit, according to police, and the area was cordoned off around Karolinenplatz, a short distance from the Israeli consulate.
