It pushed the website way down the lists of search results for relevant queries like "price comparison" and "comparison shopping".

In its 2017 judgement, the European Commission found that Google had illegally promoted its own comparison shopping service in search results, whilst demoting those of competitors.

"Our approach has worked successfully for more than seven years, generating billions of clicks for more than 800 comparison shopping services," it said.

The company started holding auctions for shopping search listings that it would bid for alongside other comparison shopping services.

“Google, as found by the Commission and confirmed by the General Court, was leveraging its dominant position on the market for general search services to favor its own comparison shopping service by favoring the display of its result,” the Court of Justice said in a press summary of the opinion.
