After seeing Moreno perform, television producer Jeff Valdez booked him for “Comedy Compadres,” which showcased Latino comics.

She not only stood united on the picket lines with her fellow acting compadres, but tapped into new layers of her artistry through musical and directing projects.

It takes him about a month to set up for the annual celebration with help from family, his compadres and teens from the local soccer club he coaches, he said.

After a moment, he said, “Compadres, please, help me get my son-in-law into the house. He must be given his own measure of respect. It appears that our birthday celebration has turned into a wake. Please, if you could help me, amigos.”

But they and others of their ilk are philosophical compadres.
