What separates the two episodes is of course 7 October 2023 - the bloodiest day in the history of Israel and a political, military and intelligence failure of catastrophic proportions.

This week has seen Lebanon’s bloodiest day since its civil war; Israeli airstrikes killed more than 600 people including 50 children, according to Lebanese health officials.

It is becoming the bloodiest day in Lebanon since Hezbollah attacked Israel in support of Hamas on 7 October last year.

It’s the bloodiest episode since the war that brought the country independence in 1971.

The bloodiest such incident was at a nightclub in Birmingham, Ala., where four people died and at least 10 were injured in a drive-by shooting.
