The 61-year-old started collecting bricks when he noticed other archaeologists discarding them at digs.

The discovery of the city, which is the size of Scotland's capital Edinburgh, was made “by accident” when one archaeologist browsed data on the internet.

"The history of Central Asia is now changing with this finding," said archaeologist Farhod Maksudov, who was part of the research team.
