Cardiac arrest and the anesthesias used in ERs are capable of triggering NDE-like brain states.

They occur, particularly, in connection with certain phenomena of hystero-epilepsy so-called, or with the deeper forms of epilepsy in which there are various paresthesias, hyperesthesias and anesthesias as a consequence of a disturbance of the circulation in the central nervous system; and probably also of the connections made by neurons and the movements of neuroglia cells in making and breaking these connections.

About 40% of the anesthesias are given by members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, about 45% by certified registered nurse anesthetists, and the remainder by other physicians, nurses or technicians.

The dentists were interested because tic douloureux is often mistaken for jumping toothaches or nerve pain following extractions and dental anesthesias.
