Bluthenthal coauthored a 2021 study in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, finding that Black and Latino populations in Los Angeles and San Francisco were less likely to have access to naloxone, the life-saving opioid overdose reversal medication.

As published last month in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, the research team found that when administering cannabis to people in standard doses, the typical rate of anxiety and paranoia among test subjects dropped steadily as the scientists increased the amount of a naturally occurring lemon-scented aromatic — one that hasn't been proven to have any effect on how individuals experience a cannabis high until now.

But researchers did count 58 associated causes, including some deaths directly related to bingeing, like alcohol dependence syndrome or poisoning, and other conditions less directly related, including breast cancer, heart disease and car crashes.

However, it reported "limited evidence of any reduction in consumption" among people with alcohol dependence.
