On 30 May 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay arrived back at advance base camp after climbing Everest.

The Advance Base that Byrd and his crew eventually established was 178 miles away — a treacherous, crevasse-laden journey across the Ross Ice Shelf.

"Even from the base camp, they ride yaks to reach the advance base camp," says Ang Thsering Sherpa, a veteran mountaineer in Nepal.

Haidri said Dessureault’s body was brought to the mountain’s advance base camp and would be transported to Islamabad.
