Jonathan Franzen offered to “vouchsafe my secrets,” discussing religion, women and when we might expect the next novel at the Festival of Books.

But CNN doesn’t have a Sulzberger family to vouchsafe the network’s journalistic values; and it doesn’t have a giant pot of government licencing money to play with; and it doesn’t even have the sorts of ratings numbers that might justify its inflated reputation as the last word in televised news.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.
