Some people will go to a tornado shelter as soon as a warning is issued.

Many mobile homes are spread throughout rural areas, with the nearest tornado shelter too far away to reach when a warning arrives with minutes to spare.

About 100 people hunkered down in a tornado shelter in Starkville, Mississippi, where Craig Ceecee, a meteorologist at Mississippi State University, said he peered out at “incredibly black” skies.

“Remember, an RV is not a tornado shelter, even though during ‘normal strong’ winds of 30-40 mph, it feels secure compared with a tent.

“Further,” she adds, “because the flash flood threat often comes directly after the tornado threat, you should be prepared to quickly emerge from your tornado shelter and get in a position to protect yourself from flooding impacts.”
