Sources told ProPublica that the inspector general asked witnesses about Ernst, but because of the redactions in the report, it’s unclear which sections, if any, refer to the senator.

The report has been published with redactions on police request.

The department began preserving the records thereafter, but released them to The Times with significant redactions.
