They then cross-matched the findings with a catalog of 2.4 million quiescent galaxies compiled over recent decades by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

In 2019, a routine observation by the Zwicky scope noticed a previously unheralded quiescent galaxy called SDSS1335+0728, 300 million light-years away, suddenly brighten.

"We found that TILs from metastatic uveal melanoma have the potential to attack the tumor, but something in the tumor microenvironment is shutting them down, so they're in a dormant, or quiescent, state," explained Kammula.

When cells shift from active to quiescent states, the presence and abundance of certain proteins important to metabolism change.

"Now that we've discovered that this research created not only a tool but gave us unique insight to cellular processes that are different between quiescent and activated neural stem cells, I feel even more strongly that identifying a cell based on how they act versus how they express one protein will shift studies from studying static systems to dynamic systems," says Moore.
