The book’s protagonist, Javari Harris, is a 12-year-old boy and New York Mets fan who leaves his close-knit family in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to travel, via bus, to a small town in rural West Virginia called Horsewhip Hollow.

Duterte was regularly whipped by his mother, who reportedly once wore out a horsewhip from the frequent beatings, his brother said.

Then on one spring day in April 2016, Margaret did something for the first time in her riding life: She dropped her horsewhip.

That dropped horsewhip, they soon knew, was an early sign of the brain tumors that would end her life a year later.
