In addition to the Holocaust, the collaborative would focus on education about “other genocides, including, but not limited to, those of the Armenian, Bosnian, Cambodian, Guatemalan, Indigenous American, Rwandan, and Uyghur peoples” and “identify and confront anti-Semitism and hate in modern society.”

The program, an official minor at USC, requires students to enroll in five courses from a list that includes several on the Holocaust as well as on the Armenian genocide and other genocides, such as targeted killings of Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994.

When Braun introduced the legislation, staff at the Holocaust Center for Humanity in Seattle didn’t feel fully ready to move forward because the center had only recently begun expanding the curriculum it produced for the schools to include other genocides.

Simon said people may have misunderstood the center’s intention as it began work on developing curriculum to teach about other genocides.

So far, the center has speakers lined up from the Rwandan and Cambodian genocides and is working to include Native voices.
