The idea of putting fluoride in water systems started way back in the late 1940s and early 1950s after a dentist researching a dental condition involving mottled and discolored teeth called “Colorado brown stain” discovered that the cause was naturally occurring fluoride in the water.

A chemist for the Alcoa Aluminum Company doing research on discolored teeth to determine whether it was caused by aluminum discovered that the cause was fluoride, not aluminum.

The ordinance was approved after Silly String sprayed during a parade at a local apple harvest festival “discolored cars, stained clothing and instruments, and almost caused two police officers in the parade to lose control of their motorcycles,” according to the Hartford Courant.

Much of that loss is driven by over-purchasing, and strict regulations for food donations, but at least part of the problem is that U.S. consumers widely avoid taking home fruits and vegetables that are too small, oddly shaped and discolored, or cosmetically scarred.

“A lot of food we’ve been recommended since we’ve been here looks like this,” he said, showing pictures of several unappetizing, and what appeared to be soggy and discolored, foods.
