Judges have struggled even to define how copyright infringement principles apply to technology that doesn’t output exact copies of copyrighted works but “mimics” them — rather like how the beverage machine in Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” delivered “a cupful of liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.”

The prize website notes it has sold more copies than the last three Booker Prize winners combined before their wins.

Their debut album, Stereo Typical, which came three years after the group formed in Brighton in 2008, sold more than 600,000 copies.

The project was founded by Geldof and Ure in 1984, and the original single sold more than two million copies, and raised around £8m.

My Chemical Romance formed in 2001 and released four studio albums — two sold more than a million copies each — during its 12-year run.
