Bear Mountain resort in Big Bear is adding its first new chair lift in 30 years, a six-seat, high-speed lift that will carry its first customers Thursday.

The resort — including three chair lifts, ticket booth, warming hut with a full kitchen and a handful of snowcats and snowmobiles — was listed earlier this year for $2.3 million.

It will take time to dig out chair lifts, they said.

Baldy Resort in the San Gabriel Mountains, said they expect to open their snow play area Saturday and Sunday as well as a chair lift “through the holidays.”

It is a part of the world where chair lifts and rickety rope bridges are the fastest way to move from a village on one hillside to its nearest neighbour across ravines and valleys.
