If China and the U.S. decoupled their economies, duplicate supply chains would emerge — one that involves China and one that involves the U.S.

Speaking to Radio 4's Woman's Hour, she said some companies were actively checking their supply chains to make sure slave labour had not been used and reflecting that "on their packaging".

"We must strengthen strategic resolve... and uphold the stability of the global free trade system as well as industrial and supply chains," he said.

Still, analysts say it will be difficult to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. and rebuilding supply chains could take years.

The IPO has started looking into whether "criminals are to trying infiltrate supply chains" and is also concerned some fake goods could be "unsafe or dangerous".
