A mysterious fungus that has killed millions of bats in the eastern United States and left caves littered with their tiny carcasses has arrived in Northern California and appears poised to spread throughout the state, according to officials.

No one knows how the fungus arrived in North America, but it has spread rapidly across the U.S. and Canada, leaving legions of bat carcasses in its death march.

The diseased carcasses are brought to Baker’s rendering site in Kerman, where the bodies are “recycled” and turned into “high protein” animal feed and fertilizer, or rendered into liquids that are then used in fuels, paints, varnishes, lubricants “and all sort of different industrial products.”

There, workers methodically dismantle carcasses into primal cuts: chuck, rib, loin, flank, shank.

Last week, footage circulated of heaps of cow carcasses left exposed outside of farms in California.
