The series will stage 17 events next year, six on oval speedways, seven on road courses and four on the streets, making it the most eclectic racing series in the U.S.

For 25 years the speedway has been a gathering spot for car enthusiasts.

Jay, who played for Whitehaven Miners Social Football Club, had been following in his father’s footsteps by taking up speedway at Workington Comets and was said to have loved being outdoors.

They said he was an avid motorcycle speedway fan, a passion he had shared with his dad since first being taken to Workington Speedway when he was one.

The video boards inside the speedway flashed that a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect as the band of rain, along with dangerous wind and lightning, approached from the west.
