“You can’t keep going faster and faster, because what then happens is that the tips of your blades start approaching Mach one,” Bob Balaram, the chief engineer for the Mars helicopter at JPL, tells The Verge.

It was originally announced under the working name Mach One, but last year Ford filed a trademark for the Mach E name, which it could end up using.

So is trainer Frank Lucarelli, who had high hopes for Mach One Rules, who was second in the Mile last year.

“It’s pretty amazing, they’re doing this for the third year now,” said Mach One Rules trainer Frank Lucarelli.
