Twenty years later, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he said the day was a dividing line in his life, “before 9/11 and after” and for years following “it was still so raw it felt like yesterday”.

"I remember that day like yesterday," he said.

"It feels like yesterday, and then it also feels like a really long time ago."

She said: "I came here to pay my respects and put flowers down. Every time there is an incident like this, I've lived this myself and even though it was 26 years ago, it still feels like yesterday and you relive it."
