Zhang, an award-winning author of “How Much of These Hills Is Gold” and “Land of Milk and Honey,” was scheduled to speak at the May 8 education school doctoral hooding ceremony.

“This was the Tinseltown. This was the land of milk and honey.”

Art in ‘Land of Milk and Honey,’ a lively, engaging and sometimes sobering group exhibition at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture, casts a skeptical eye on California agriculture.

"We aim to effectively inform people ... that Finland is not a land of milk and honey that can be entered so easily, and hopefully this will hold back entrants," he said.

“Land of Milk and Honey,” Zhang’s newest novel, is set farther afield — on a remote Italian mountaintop in a dystopian future — but it returns to the concept of food in times of crisis.
