When she needed plywood blocks to mount linoleum woodcuts, one of her neighbors did the sawing.

"The layered branches of this conifer reminded me of the dancing cranes often featured in Japanese woodcuts," said Sharpe.

Ms. Klement had early success with woodcuts that were influenced by Edvard Munch and German Expressionism.

A collection of her pieces are represented in the Codex, including a series of woodcuts printed with black Ukrainian soil.

The short film, which runs about nine minutes, features the Beijing-based artist’s detailed painting, woodcut, charcoal and ink drawing work.
