They included five-a-day campaigns to promote eating fruit and veg, food labelling to highlight calorie content, restrictions on advertising unhealthy food to children and voluntary agreements with manufacturers to reformulate foods.

"Increased access to unhealthy food retail outlets can be associated with increased weight status in the general population and increased obesity and unhealthy eating behaviours among children residing in low-income areas," it said.

Portugal has restricted the advertising of unhealthy food on TV and radio at broadcast times when at least 25% of the audience is made up of under-16s.

That same year, medium-to-large supermarkets in England were also stopped from displaying certain unhealthy food and drink in particular areas.

Findings from the recent poll come amid growing, global calls for further taxation on unhealthy food products.
