Tehran said it had attacked Israel in retaliation for what it called the "violation of Iran’s sovereignty and the martyrdom" of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed by an explosion in Tehran in July that Iranian officials blamed on Israel, but Israeli officials did not claim responsibility.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced five days of mourning in Iran in response to what he called the "martyrdom of the great Nasrallah", describing him as "a path and a school of thought" that would continue.

“Hamas is an idea, and the martyrdom of its leaders does not stop this idea,” Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told the Al-Aqsa news channel.

In comments reported on Hamas's Telegram channel, he thanked God for the "honour" bestowed on him by what he called the "martyrdom of his children and grandchildren".

“Our revenge will be tough as always, but a revenge that could compensate for the martyrdom of Seyed Razi is nothing but the removal of Israel from the face of existence.”
