Mr. Ruddy was a gravelly-voiced former systems programmer and shoe salesman who, by the time Paramount Pictures was preparing to film “The Godfather,” had become known for the unlikely success of “Hogan’s Heroes” and for producing a couple of movies that had come in under budget.

An accounting systems programmer in her 50s, Tanya said she had a reason to hate the Ukrainian government: some of its fighters had beaten her husband to death at a checkpoint in 2014, when Russian-backed separatists seized parts of the two eastern provinces, Donetsk and Luhansk, that make up the Donbas.

She accompanied her Navy officer husband on overseas postings and then in 1995 began working for the Navy Department as a computer systems programmer.

Stephen Gold:  I started my career as a systems programmer and I worked through the ranks and basically have done every job of every person in an IT organization. 

A senior systems programmer, she met regularly with a small group of associates at conferences every year, invariably listening silently as they reported on their spouses or the child who just learned to ride a bike.
