The souks and shops in the Old City and elsewhere in Israel and the occupied West Bank are denuded of tourists, as shopkeepers try to survive on the still bustling local market.

The old market, or souk, was treasured by Hussein Jaber, 30, who is part of the government’s emergency services.

Most were religious tourists from Lebanon and Iraq, though some others may have come to shop in Damascus's souks.

Palestinian Israelis come, too, to amble through the souks of the Old City, buy traditional products like olive oil soap and gorge their way through the city’s embarrassment of rich desserts.

The region, one of Morocco's poorest, lies close to Marrakech, a popular tourist destination with luxurious hotels, fancy shopping centres and a historic souk.
