The softcover volume focuses on what might be called the three “S’s”: the Snoqualmie River and to a lesser extent its downstream siblings, the Skykomish and Snohomish — a system emanating from the Cascades and snaking to saltwater in a northwesterly direction from above Snoqualmie Falls to Everett.

I think by the time I was a grown adult, there was one thin softcover booklet about transsexuals, and I read that, but there was nothing else available.

The exhibit is accompanied by a large-format softcover book with over a hundred photographs, edited by William Eggleston III, the artist’s son, featuring an essay by Robert Slifkin and a short story by Rachel Kushner.

I have not read “Crossroads” — the new one — because last time I asked it was not available in softcover, and I cannot have hardcovers.

On one occasion, I set the phone down on a softcover book, and it somehow shimmied itself across the cover and off of a side table when I wasn’t looking.
