This sets off a chain reaction of events culminating in the creation of a “polar vortex” with more extreme cold, storminess and snow.

The Met Office has issued six yellow warnings for snow and ice across the UK, with the warning for Wales in place until 10:00 GMT on Wednesday.

However, with temperatures dropping to freezing levels and snow hitting parts of the UK, rising energy bills will once again become the focus of many households.

Beyond wind, rain and snow, the storm could also bring flash flooding, rock slides and debris flows as well as heavy mountain snow and blizzard conditions in areas of high elevation.

About 130 schools have shut and several roads are closed after snow fell across parts of Wales.
