Amid the monstrous heaps of twisted metal, pools of congealed oil and walls pockmarked by shrapnel, one incongruous detail catches my eye.

On the morning of 20 April 2023, shrapnel shredded the abdomen of a 32-year-old Ukrainian soldier who goes by the call sign “Black.”

“This device was wrapped in nails to cause more substantial injuries to anyone within range of the shrapnel,” the FBI said in a statement at the time.

The force of the impact slammed Assi into the dirt and pelted her with shrapnel.
