Mencken presciently saw this day coming when he wrote in Baltimore’s Evening Sun on July 26, 1920, “On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”

He draws angry lines of division between a nasty, mask-wearing, church-hating, science-worshiping elite and the good, plain folks who support him.

They’re all just plain folks, leading ordinary lives … and making terrible mistakes.
