It comes after the government disclosed an official estimate that the move would push an extra 50,000 pensioners into poverty.

The government has also announced that it will start means-testing winter fuel payments, halting them for 10 million pensioners in England and Wales.

An additional 50,000 pensioners will be living in relative poverty next year as a result of cuts to the winter fuel allowance, the government's own estimates have revealed.

Under the party’s plans, all pensioners would receive a payment via a devolved benefit, though it would be tapered so that the wealthiest households received less.

In August, the UK Government said winter fuel payments would be means tested and only go to pensioners on certain benefits.
