The current best candidate for dark matter is the axion, a particle that fits nicely within the standard model of physics and solves several other outstanding puzzles in particle physics.

“These artificial neural networks have been used to advance research across physics topics as diverse as particle physics, material science and astrophysics,” said Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, at the announcement.

Her discovery of the Kaon particle helped lead to a revolution in the theory of particle physics.

It completed what is called the standard model of particle physics.
