The new research comes after an increasing number of drivers have reported being dazzled by oncoming headlights to motoring organisations and optometrists.

In swaths of the U.S., a shortage of optometrists and ophthalmologists can make appointments hard to schedule, sometimes booking for months out.

They then validated the lens by using it to image a digital 'E,' much like those used on an optometrist's light-up board.

In yet another letter, Huizar’s elderly mother, Isidra Huizar, implored the judge to show mercy, saying her son routinely helps her with her dentist, her heart doctor, her optometrist, her prescriptions and other medical needs.

"Most patients see their optometrist when they start experiencing visual symptoms and may be referred to an ophthalmologist who may also fail to recognize PCA," she said.
