The Republican Governor’s Association has devised a layaway purchase plan allowing brand-name corporations to make secret donations of $100,000 or more a year to the RGA in support of the corporate-friendly agenda of various GOP governors.

Layaway isn’t without risk—there are usually penalties for failing to complete the transaction—but the fees charged for canceling a layaway purchase will almost always be cheaper than the fees incurred while paying off the same purchase slowly with credit card minimum payments.

The typical layaway purchase, however, involves several trips to the store in order to make a series of payments.

Going forward, there are no such fees, though there is a $10 penalty charged if the layaway purchase is cancelled.

Soon after Toys R Us introduced its layaway program, though, Walmart reduced its layaway fee from $15 to $5 — and it’ll still be given back to consumers in the form of a gift card when the layaway purchase is completed.
