It’s hard not to consider humankind’s own future in this region-unspecified, newly aquatic land where mountaintops are islands, northern lights dazzle and finger-like towers that seem man-made dot the background.

The study uncovered regions already known to be high-risk areas for ship strikes: North America's Pacific coast, Panama, the Arabian Sea, Sri Lanka, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean Sea.

The North Carolina-based company operates about 4,700 stores along with 1,100 independently operated locations, which are primarily in the U.S. but also in Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean islands.

Most known bird extinctions have happened on islands, where populations are small and ill prepared for new threats, such as hunting, introduced predators, and diseases.
