That study examined what are known as intraurban heat islands — areas within a city that are measurably hotter than other parts of the same cityscape.

Within these heat islands are especially hot hotspots, or intraurban heat islands, which tend to have the least green space.

He went out to inspect favourable sites in regions whose very names were unfamiliar to him, travelled on dirty little intraurban railway lines to hitherto unimagined railway stations, found parks, churches, workhouses, institutions, public-houses, canals, factories, gas-works, warehouses, foundries and sidings, amidst a multitudinous dinginess of mean houses, shabby back-yards, and ill-kept streets.

The stations and approaches are commodious, and the stations themselves furnish conveniences to passengers heretofore not heard of on intraurban lines.
