House of Lords

Mr. Prescott retired as an elected lawmaker in 2010 and was made a member of the House of Lords, the second chamber of Parliament.

Lord Prescott ceased to be a member of the House of Lords in July of this year due to non-attendance, having only spoken once in the chamber since suffering a stroke in 2019.

In order to become law it would need approval from both the House of Commons and House of Lords.

The commission is led by Gisela Stuart, once a Labour MP who has since been appointed as an independent peer to the House of Lords.

It prompted criticism from a House of Lords committee, which said the change was being introduced "at a pace that does not permit appropriate scrutiny".
